Chuck, I too was primarily a Marvel kid. Dont know if it was because of the old Batman tv show and the Superfriends cartoon, but I always perceived the DC universe as a bit cheesy and campy. I mean, cmon, Superdog?? But like yourself, with some of there newer films, and having read some stuff Alan Moore has written for them I have come around. I will always be a Marvel guy, but I am pretty psyched for this upcomming Green Lantern Movie. I am a big fan of Ryan Reynolds as well, and believe he will be good for the part. I do however have one problem with the casting. Whats with the double dipping of actors in comic films these days. Deadpool and GL? At least these are different universes. Now we got Johnny Storm as Capt. America? Is Chris Evans so gifted that nobody else could pull off Cap like he can? Lets be serious. Maybe they are just trying to ballance out the fact that we are being subject to a third Bruce banner in as many films. The studios need to understand that the die hards who come out for these types of movies are VERY particular about the film versions of their favorite characters. Hers a rule of thumb they can go by. If you are going to make a major motion picture about a character that an adult dresses up like at comic con, Dont take liberties with the storyline, find an original face to play the part, and when possible stick with them.
Still cant wait to see GL

I enjoyed Spawn, even though most did not. Regardless, sign me up for tickets to anything that stars Sir Black Dynomite.
I took the liberty of throwing the "Sir" in there as I am sure if he were to ever meet the queen, she would insist Black Dynomite be knighted immediately!

Cool review, Chuck. Now I'm even more psyched about checking this out. Hopefully, I can get to a 3D Imax venue for my 40th B-day in a couple of weeks because this is not a film I'm going to see for the first time on my lame ass TV, like I finally just did with District 9.

...and I will develop that Super 8 film sometime soon, bro. Careful what you wish for.

I usually reserve commenting on a movie till the next day, I like to let it marinate for 24 hours or so. I sent out that txt as soon as it was over because I havnt been that pleasantly surprised by a movie in a very long time. I mean there were a hand full of times I was laughing out loud. So, a couple days later Im driving on the Belt parkway at the usual 4 mph and the image of Woody Harrelson standing there with a hand full of obliterated mush that was formerly a box of Twinkies pops into my head. The look on his face as he examines the contents in his hand and looks over at Jesse Eisenberg who just utters "I dont have the words", had me laughing out loud again days later, alone, in my car. Thats when I had the thought, I think Im gonna go see this movie again. I almost never do that. Loved this movie, and that was a great reference to Johny Dangerously Chuck.
Oh, and Emma Stone ? who knew she could be that hot!

The creators of lost have stated that she will return as a regular character in season 6.
If she was dead... how could this be? Her avatar couldn't be in it enough to be considered a main character, surely.
Nup, she's alive and kickin'.

I thought the movie was good, not great.
Funny, the exact thing that got to me was some of the effects. I texted this to Chuck earlier. The main one for me was the claws in the bathroom as well. It took me out of the movie for a minute it was so bad. Looked like the kind of effect I would expect to see in a made for tv movie on the Sci-fi network about a giant mutated snake in Miami. His escape from the farm house on the motorcycle got to me as well. his digging the claws in the ground and spinning the bike arround looked stupid. Yes, the fire escape was brutal. I told Chuck I give the movie a B- at best, and those scenes really were the reason. I would give those three scenes an F+.
Agreed, Reynolds was good, and not used nearly enough.
It was good, I expected a little more though.

Thanks for the totally contradictory advice, guys :)
I'm a little late to the party on this one and I didn't want to spoil the comic by seeing the movie, although I gather the ending is different. So, of course, I'm doing what any geek in my position would: reading the book really fast before the movie is out of the theaters.

Well, no, but then again, they didn't really have keyboards (so to speak) in the Old Republic.

I do agree with one thing Jason said...the movie does deserve big screen treatment, plus anything that will push its domestic gross over the $120M production budget is a good thing (Every $10.50 helps!)

Did the great man also speak in broken English like you?

And Doug, I would say see the movie first for three reasons.

1. It's still in theaters and it deserves to be seen on the big screen.

B. Watching the movie will allow you to enjoy it without preconceived knowledge or expectations.

III. Chuck said to read the book first, so obviously this is the wrong answer.

Hmmm, that's a tough one. But I have to say the book is definitely the right choice for you. Watchmen should be experienced as the graphic novel first.

The movie did great job, but I found it enjoyable seeing how the translated the novel to the screen.

As a great man once said: "You must do what you think is right, of course."

Chuck, I feel your pain. I remember when Ben was a puppy, I wondered for a while if he would change the channel by farting after eating our remote. Don't worry, they outgrow it. Usually. Although, I have met some labs who never get a brain. Hearing your reaction made me think, Oh my god, Chuck is living my life for a day.

Anyway, here's my dilemma: Do I go see Watchmen on the big screen, and then read the graphic novel, or do I experience the story in book form first and watch the movie when it comes out on DVD?

Brett underwhelmed... what a shock!

I'm pretty sure that we could have a nuclear holocaust and Brett would look up moments before the blastwave and say "These explosion effects really are not so fantastic, and my fellow citizens... C'mon people, I'm really not believing your fear... I give this a 5 out of 10"

I thought that Dreiberg was pretty spot on, but Ozymandais was pretty bland(and scrawny).

So, Chuck and I saw it las night, and I must say...I was very underwhelmed by the flick.

Let me start by saying visually, it was an outstanding achievement. From this aspect, I feel like Zach Snyder was successful in translating the visuals from the page to the screen. In some scenes, almost exactly.

Acting...I'd have to disagree with you Dogde...I felt Patrick Wilson did a pretty solid job of portraying Dreiberg...remember back to the book and how nerdy he really was. If anything, I though Wilson and the writers made him a little too cool. Jackie Earl Haley was clearly the stand out here though. A lot of his story was left out, and that's a shame. I agree with you that a Rorschach movie would be really cool.

As far as chapter IV is concerned, I think they really missed a big part of the story line there. That whole section provides the story with a real look into Dr. Manhattan and Laurie Juspeckzzwajehajckea-whatever. I was left feeling that those two characters were incomplete in the end...now that I think about it more, I feel like this applies to The Comedian and Sally Jupiter. It started out in the right direction with both of these characters and portraying their respective issues, but this all got lost at some point about half way through.

I'm not about to say that I think Snyder sucks and shouldn't have made this movie, or anything like that. I'm really just saying that this graphic novel was constructed in such a way by Alan Moore, that it really is not possible to fully translate it as a 2+ hour movie.

Chuck and I were discussing it, and the way I explained it to him was that this type of story, translated to a movie is most readily available for the Batman franchise. More specifically, a few of the themes touched on, were also explored by the Dark Knight Returns novel. What would make this even easier to digest is that there is really only 1 character to digest, rather than more than 8 in Watchmen.

As for the ending...I actually prefer Snyder's version over the original. The whole squid thing was a little ridiculous, and the way they incorporated blaming Dr. M to save the masses worked much better. (do you find it ironic that The Dark Knight used this exact same plot point less than 1 year ago??? I'm just saying....)

I would rate this somewhere between a 6 and a 7. Visuals, effects and cinematography were outstanding...story, character development and flow weakened the over all story...

I'll be expected a lot for X-Men Origins: Wolverine in a few weeks

Saw the film Friday morning when I got off from work. Yes Im calling it a film, not a movie. I thought it was very well done.
I cant agree more that there were moments during the film that I was thinking to myself that if I hadnt read the novel Im not sure I would know what the hell was going on. But I did read it twice, so it was easy for me to put the pieces together. Non readers may have a problem from time to time.
One moment I loved from the graphic novel left out of the film was Rorscharch breaking the guys fingers one at a time in the bar. I loved this part of the book. In the film he squeezed the guys hand on a broken glass, nice, but I liked the fingers better.
One of my fav segments of the graphic was Chapter IV. I thought the film lacked a bit in this area. I liked how Dr. manhattan kept bouncing through time as he told his story in this chapter. I thought the underplayed it in the film.
I loved all the music in the movie, but there were times that I thought I would have chosen differently. The apocalypse now music during the vietnam scene was a bit obviouse.
Anyway, Im picking it appart. bottom line is I loved it. even the changes mage to the end were ok. they didnt totaly fuck it up like they did I am legend. Small changes that worked.
Lastly, Ihave comments on two of the actors.
first, I thought Patrick Willson as Night Owl two was sooo bad, it came close to ruining the film for me, and I am of the oppinion that there hasnt been a bounce back performance as strong as Jackie Earle Haleys Rorscharch since Travoltas Vincent Vega. In fact, if someone said to me tomorrow that they were going to make a movie about Rorschach, I wouldnt be surprised. He was awesome.

One more point: I don't think Ben and Charles had a deal about not killing each other. Instead, they both know that they have a destiny, and that neither can die before they fulfill it (think of when Michael tried to kill himself, or when Keamy tried to shoot Michael). It is more about the "rules" that Faraday and Hawking mentioned.

I have a slightly different theory, but closely related. Try this:

Early 1940’s: Richard Alpert is told by Jacob to visit the mainland, and find a very special young boy named Charles Widmore. Alpert gives Widmore a test, and unlike a young John Locke, Widmore passes the test. Alpert takes Widmore to the island, and raises him among the Others.

Early 1970’s: After around 30 years on the island, Widmore has risen to a leadership post, and for some reason, turns the wheel, moving the island, exiling himself and waking up in the Tunisian desert.

Widmore is desperate to either get back, or find a way to use the power of the island. He convinces a man named Hanso, along with a pair of Michigan grad students named the DeGroots, to fund a project called the Dharma Initiative. He informs them of the island, and with the help of Eloise Hawking, they build a station that allows them to find the island.

1992: Ben is instrumental in The Purge, which wipes out the Dharma Initiative. Ben gets everything he had by taking it from Charles Widmore. Widmore begins to plot how to get back to the island.

My reasoning: First, Widmore had to have lied when he told Locke that Ben tricked him into moving the island. Ben had to blow a hole in the Orchid Station in order to get to the wheel, so the island clearly hadn’t been moved since before Dharma. This scenario solves that problem. Second, it solves the “three decades” problem. Widmore didn’t say that his three decades started when he first met Locke. Third, it solves the Penny birth problem. If Penny is in her 30s in 2004, that means she was born in the 1970s, which is around the Dharma time. If Widmore had been on the island then, he would have either had to send Penny’s mother away, or have adopted her. Either are possible, but unnecessary in this scenario. Fourth, it solves the problem of how DI new to look for the island in the first place. Hawking said that her station was used to find the island in the first place, but the only way they would have known that there was an island to find was if someone told them, like Widmore. Fifth, it solves the problem of how Keamy knew about the Orchid. That had to have been one of the most secretive parts of DI, and if Widmore had been connected to DI, he could have known about it.

I’m still working out the details, but this story ties together a lot of loose ends.

This is an interesting and well thought out theory. However, there is another mystery for which I currently have no theory's or ideas of, perhaps you can help me with it: The mystery of the missing podcast. You guys recorded it weeks ago and yet, when I check the site - no new podcast. :(

It's only the whole reason for this site right? Or perhaps I am mistaken, perhaps a wall of text about Charles Widmore takes precedence. Seriously though, I love a good lost post as much (if not more) than anyone but c'mon Chuck, give us podcasts.

Doug, in regard to your Dark Tower comment, I have finished reading the series, I suppose that could be a topic for the next podcast I'm invited to, if they dare have my opinionated rants again, seeing as the last one I was attached to was the lowest rated ever...

Very interesting about Jin! I wonder if he is going to be stuck there, or if he's traveling around in time like everyone else?

Yeah, Jays comment is directed at me. I'll admit it you were right. Poor Jin though, he starts to learn a little english and now he's surrounded french people. Also, shouldn't Roussou have recognized him when they first met in season 1 or 2? Or is it possible they were never in a scene together?

Yeah, the lawyer line was as good as the "ninja moves and spy stuff" line in that previous episode. But my favorite line of this episode was, "Jack, we're running out of time." A little ode to Mr. Bauer?

BTW, thanks for the shout out in the podcast. I can't wait to hear what Brett has to say about the Dark Tower if and when he ever finishes it. I totally get that slowing down at the end of a great read, so it won't end. But in this case, I think he will get a chuckle out of what King has in store for people with that problem.
